| Trampolining
I took up trampolining at
9 years old when I attended a summer school at my local youth
club in Leeds. As one of the better kids I was invited back to
join coaching sessions when the term started that Autumn. By the
age of 10 I had won my first competition and got the taste for
winning. By 13 I was Yorkshire and North Midlands U15 champion
and was regularly appearing on the national circuit. Throughout
my teens I qualified for both the juniors and the seniors National
championships every year and was selected as a youth international
for the UK - Germany match in 1979. I was also National Schools
champion that year. I competed until I was 24, winning a number
of Open titles and I retired in 1985 as Yorkshire & North
Midlands Open Champion, Scottish Open Champion and Scottish Synchro
Champion.
At eighteen I passed my first
coaching award and quickly qualified up to Intermediate coach.
I had to wait till I was 21 to take my Advanced coaching award,
but passed that in June 1982, becomming the youngest ever Advanced
coach. At the same time I also qualified as a judge.
I took over as head coach
of West Yorkshire Supertramps, my local club in 1979, when my
coach retired and ran it until moving south in 1992. We managed
to gain recognition as an "Advanced Centre" for Trampolining,
one of only 4 others in the country. We had over 200 performers
in the club with sessions running 6 days a week on 6 top quality
6mm trampolines. We had more than 10 qualified coaches in the
club at various levels, with many performers competing at the
top level.
In 1992 we moved down south
for work and I didn't do much Trampolining for a while. When Natasha
started school I offered to do a Trampoline display at the school
fete and I've been doing it almost every year since.
In 1999 I started coaching
again at Sawston Village College Sport Centre. Starting with just
one leisure class and two trampolines we now have 3 recreational
classes. The school has 2x 77A trampolines and part owns a 6mm
EuroTramp.
In 2004 I set up Cambridge
Canagroos Trampoline Club
Cangaroos is a competitive trampolne club, which caters for all
levels of performance. Full details of the club are available
